Surface Prep EXT™ Application / Technical data

DESCRIPTION

Surface Prep EXT™ is a concrete cleaner and heavy duty etching agent.  This product can be used as an alternate to mechanical methods of grinding and/or shot blasting.
When used properly, once applied and removed, surface level contaminates will be removed, surface pH will be reduced, the substrate will be have a Concrete Surface Profile between 2-3 and be prepared for Shaw MoistureShield or MoistureTek applications.

APPROVED SUBSTRATES

  • Shaw Surface Prep EXT is designed for use on concrete only.

  • Shaw Surface Prep EXT will clean and profile the concrete substrate in preparation for the application of Shaw MoistureShield, MoistureTek and MRP.

  • For use over chemically abated substrates, call Shaw Technical Support @ 1-800-471-7429, prior to applying Surface Prep EXT.

SUBSTRATE TESTING

  • No substrate testing required prior to application.

site conditions and PREPARATION

  • Shaw Surface Prep EXT should be applied in conditions above 40oF / 5oC.

  • Protect surfaces that are not to be treated, such as metals, painted substrates, by taping or protecting with plastic or paper material.

  • Overspray on unprotected surfaces should be wiped down immediately with a damp cloth or sponge.

substrate preparation

  • All glues and prior floor covering mastics must be removed to the bare concrete substrate.

  • Skim coats, epoxies, self-leveling underlayments or paints must be removed prior to applying Shaw Surface Prep EXT.

  • Remove any loose debris from surface by sweeping, vacuuming or pressure washing.  If a pressure washer is used, allow substrate to dry completely before application.

  • Substrate must not have any visible water present prior to application.  This will dilute Shaw Surface Prep EXT , thus reducing the effectiveness of the application.

Spread Rates

  • Coverage rate is approximately 225 square feet per gallon.

  • Heavily soiled substrates or less porous concrete substrate may require repeated applications.

  • Do not allow Shaw Surface Prep EXT to freeze.

  • Do not dilute Shaw Surface Prep EXT.

application instructions

  • Shaw Surface Prep EXT is designed to be applied by the use of a low pressure sprayer using a fan tip nozzle.

  • By using a low pressure sprayer, Shaw Surface Prep EXT is designed to be applied from a standing position.

  • Spray on the surface substrate by using a fan tip in a back and forth motion overlapping to ensure an even coverage.

  • DO NOT ATOMIZE (allow the product to become a mist or suspended in the air), this will prevent the proper application levels.

  • Once Shaw Surface Prep EXT has been applied to the substrate, wait 15-20 minutes, then the material must be agitated buy the use of a stiff bristle (non-metal) brush.  This will increase the surface etching properties to take place.  For large areas, using a walk behind scrubber is acceptable.

dwell time

  • In order to achieve a CSP of 2-3, once agitated, allow the product to dwell for 2 hours.

  • Once Shaw Surface Prep EXT is sprayed on the substrate, wait 15-20 minutes, then agitate the material with a stiff bristle brush or walk behind scrubber.

  • Small test areas can be used to determine if more Shaw Surface Prep EXT applications may be necessary based on the desired profile.  When applying the product for small test areas, Shaw Surface Prep EXT should start reacting to the concrete surface immediately and can by witnessed by the product foaming, thus reacting to the surface.  If Shaw Surface Prep EXT does not immediately foam on the surface, there may be contaminates present that need to be removed or multiple applications of Shaw Surface Prep EXT will be required. Contact Shaw Technical Support @ 1-800-471-7429, for more information.

  • For more penetrating surface profiles greater than 3, additional applications of Shaw Surface Prep EXT will be required.

removal

  • For large open areas, an auto / floor scrubber can be used to remove the Shaw Surface Prep EXT and any remaining residue.

  • For smaller, indoor applications, apply water, agitate and extract using a wet/dry vacuum system.

  • Once material is removed, a second rinse with water is required.

  • Allow the concrete substrate to dry thoroughly.

  • If Shaw Surface Prep EXT is not adequately removed, a shiny or wax like residue to the touch may be present that can interfere with the application or adhesion of secondary substrate treatments.  Additional water and extraction will be necessary to remove.

Clean Up

  • Clean all tools and equipment with water.

  • Follow all local regulations for disposal.
  • Unused product can be stored in its original containers.

Safety

  • Use in well ventilated areas, do not ingest, swallow or inhale.

  • Protective gear should be used, gloves and eye glass protection.

  • If used in confined spaces, use a painter’s mask.

  • For skin and eye contact, flush with water.
