Prevention of Scratches/Scuffs on LVT

There is a misconception that LVT should not scratch.  Luxury Vinyl Tile is a plastic and will scratch if proper preventative protection is not used.  Many furniture protectors have plastic chair glides or protectors, this type of protection will scratch LVT flooring.
Shaw Industries recommends using heavy duty felt protectors for furniture.  Do not use felt protection that can be purchased retail as these protectors will easily fall off. Place chair pads underneath rolling chairs to prevent damage to the LVT flooring.

Recommended protectors can be purchased from the following websites:

  1. www.1877floorguy.com

  2. www.allglides.com

  3. http://www.shifflerequipment.com/

  4. http://expandedtechnologies.com/

A good rule of thumb- use soft protection on hard flooring.
Correction of Scratches/Scuffs on LVT
Definitions:
Scuff- Transfer of a substance onto the surface of the floor from shoes or other objects.
Scratch- Score or mark the surface of the floor with a sharp or pointed object.
Scuffs and light scratching can be removed using a 175 rpm buffer and a 3M red pad along with a neutral pH floor cleaner, such as Shaw TotalCare Hard Surface Floor Cleaner or Diversey’s Stride or Prominence.
The appearance of minor scratching can be improved by using Dr. Schutz Scratch Fix Kit, which can be purchased at www.1877floorguy.com.  Below are pictures of scratches before and after using the scratch fix kit:

If the scratch is too deep, replacement of the affected plank is the only option.
