Flooring in Gym Applications

Two  Classifications for Gyms/Workout  Rooms

Gyms / Workout Rooms with heavy free weights / barbells

Dropping weights on the floor may cause indentations that may or may not recover. In addition, it's possible that dropped weights may cut or slice the flooring. Therefore, we do NOT recommend any resilient products for gyms or workout areas that will have heavy free weights or barbells. We recommend commercial level loop broadloom rated for heavy or higher foot traffic in these areas.

Gyms / Workout Rooms with NO heavy free weights, but could include light to heavy exercise equipment (ie treadmills, ellipticals, rowing machines, weight machines)

For these areas, we recommend carpet tile and broadloom rated for heavy or higher commercial foot traffic.  Certain resilient platforms can be used in this application with the following understandings:

  • Heavy equipment left in place for long periods of time will cause indentations that may not recover. Using non-rubber backed pads or other items to try and spread the weight may help. These indentations are not defects

  • We do not recommend the use of resilient flooring in the shower areas, or any wet area, where it is expected people will be walking around on a wet floor. If the locker area does not have a shower, this is a good application.

  • Crumb rubber underlayments are not an acceptable option for use with resilient floor coverings due to performance issues resulting from chemical incompatibilities.

Platforms approved for these areas include:

  • Glue Down LVT (20 mil or higher)

  • Glue Down COREtec with Exoguard+ SPC

  • Woven LVT

  • Heterogeneous Sheet

  • Homogeneous Sheet

  • Loose Lay Product (as long as it is glued down)

  • Bio-Based Sheet

  • Bio-Based Tile

Caution when moving equipment: Lift equipment to ensure that the floor covering is not moved or damaged.
